Product Discovery Tool Checklist: 10 Questions to Ask Before You Buy

Why a checklist beats a feature grid

Most product discovery tools look the same in a demo. Each one has an inbox for ideas, a scoring screen and a roadmap view. The differences show up three months later, when feedback is scattered, scores have drifted away from strategy, and engineers are re-typing items into Jira.

This checklist is for the product manager who already feels that pain and the Head of Product or VP Product who has to approve the purchase. Use it on any vendor, including craft.io. If a tool cannot give a clear answer to a question, you have learned something useful before you signed.

Questions 1 to 3: Idea capture and customer feedback

  1. Can anyone submit an idea without a training session? Ideas come from sales, support, customers and engineers. If submitting takes a login and a manual, the best input never reaches you. Ask whether you can invite people outside your team to give feedback, as well as sync data you already have.
  2. Does feedback land in one place, or in five? Product feedback management software should pull requests from your existing sources into a single view, so you are not copying comments out of spreadsheets. Our guide to managing customer feedback covers what a healthy intake process looks like.
  3. Can you tie feedback to a customer segment? A request from ten trial users and a request from one strategic account are not the same signal. The tool should let you see who is asking, not only how many.

Questions 4 to 7: Prioritization and the roadmap

  1. Does it support the prioritization frameworks your team already uses? You should be able to score ideas with an established method rather than a number someone typed in. See our overview of product prioritization frameworks before you compare tools.
  2. Can you estimate value before you commit? Early ideas rarely have clean data. Check that the tool helps you reason about value in a structured way, as described in how to estimate the value of new product ideas.
  3. Does an approved idea flow into the roadmap, or do you rebuild it? Discovery that stops at a scoring list is half a product. Ask to see an idea become a feature and then appear on the roadmap without re-entry.
  4. Is the roadmap connected to strategy? Look for links between ideas, features and company objectives, so each roadmap item can answer the question “why this, and why now?”

Questions 8 and 9: Handoff to Jira and fit with your stack

  1. How does work reach engineering? Most teams run delivery in Jira, so the handoff matters more than any single discovery feature. Ask what syncs, in which direction, and what happens when a ticket changes status. Our integrations page lists what craft.io connects to.
  2. If you are weighing a Jira Product Discovery alternative, what exactly are you replacing? Write down what you need that a delivery-first tool does not give you, such as cross-team prioritization, portfolio views or OKR links. Then test the alternative against that list, not against a feature count.

Question 10: The business case for the VP Product

  1. Can you show the buyer what they are paying for? A VP Product or CPO signs off on outcomes, not screens. Before you request budget, answer these points:
  • What decisions are made today in spreadsheets or slide decks, and what does that cost the team in time?
  • Can reporting show roadmap progress and the gap between planned and actual delivery without a manual status meeting?
  • What does security review look like? Check the vendor’s data security documentation early so procurement does not stall the deal.
  • What does pricing look like as your team grows? Review the pricing model and ask what changes at scale.

A short trial on a real backlog tells you more than any demo. Bring one live product area, run feedback through to a roadmap item, push it to Jira, and see where the friction is.

Product discovery tool FAQ

What should a product discovery tool do?

It should capture ideas and customer feedback in one place, help you prioritize them with an established framework, and carry approved ideas into the roadmap and on to delivery without re-entry.

How is product feedback management software different from a survey tool?

Feedback management software collects requests from many sources into one view and ties them to customers and segments, so you can weigh them against strategy rather than only counting responses.

Why compare tools against Jira Product Discovery?

Many teams run delivery in Jira, so it is a natural starting point. If you need cross-team prioritization, portfolio views or OKR links, list those needs first and test any alternative against them.

Does the tool need to connect to Jira?

For most teams, yes. Ask what syncs, in which direction, and how status changes flow back, since the handoff to engineering is where manual re-entry usually creeps in.

What does a VP Product need to approve the purchase?

Evidence of the problem it solves, clear reporting on roadmap progress, a security review and a pricing model that holds up as the team grows. A short trial on a live backlog supports all four.

How should we trial a discovery tool?

Pick one live product area and run an idea from feedback through scoring to a roadmap item, then push it to Jira. Note where the process needed manual work.
